You know, it be preferable if certain Jily artists would bother to tag their art with poc/desi james potter tag. Cause not all of us consider that headcanon to be ‘canon’. The author is problematic and all, but that doesn’t mean race swapping existing white characters is any better/makes y’all superior. It works for Hermione because she’s a muggleborn and the added subtext of her being picked on by a racist, pureblood white prick like Draco and the garbage Malfoys. And this doesn’t fucking mean Jily=Dramione! Fuck no. If anything, James being the reverse of Draco, but similar in he too was a white, pure blood privileged boy raised and pampered but was actual taught to not be a complete dick to those who’s blood status isn’t pure. Changing his race to fit a certain headcanon is bs and makes Dursleys hypocritical and worse(but skin color logic, they should hate Kingsley too). And it’s always James & Harry. Never Sirius, Remus, or Lily(who has the most reason to be race swapped). So overall, this fandom is a joke

Here’s the thing, I think you’re using my blog as a platform to be heard/seen. Because I don’t think I ever shared my headcanon of why James and Harry are POC? Because I don’t fucking have one. I dunno, I just drew them as Black once and liked the design.

Can I just get this straight, though? You’re asking me to tag a character as “POC” like it’s a warning? ‘Cause you’re scared you’re gonna see a Black person? 😂 That’s what I’m picking up.

I know you’re having some big feelings right now: “How come we always have to be PC? How come things have to change? How come I can’t be comfortable all the time?” But what it boils down to is the fact that you can’t handle seeing a drawing of a character not exactly the way you want to see them. If you’re unable to scroll past a drawing you don’t like, you might have an anxiety disorder. I am 1000% serious, but you honestly might want to get evaluated by a psychiatrist. Like I am really, really serious. I think this points to something bigger than just being racist.

So uhm since people are talking about my tiktok I’m actually kinda upset about two things :

1-them saying that I’m accusing mokmoklen of queerbaiting when I’ve literally put a GIANT red disclaimer saying that I am in no way accusing the author since the story it’s still ongoing and I was just going to make a rundown of what the author has done recently that has made many upset with the recent chapter

2-that after reading my 30 slides all they’ve got was me saying that the queerbaiting is because Yoshiki’s ancestor is a woman WHICH IS NOT THE CASE AT ALL.

What has actually upset many , me included with hikarugashindaupdates as well who’s a dear friend of mine , is how mokmoklen has been backtracking from the original idea of the story and is now trying to erase all the subtext and implications of their feelings for one another.

When the story first started it was advertised as BL and horror , and the kind of dynamic she wanted to develop for Yoshiki and Hikaru was way different compared to what we got now (I talked about this in detail in my video so if you wanna know more look it up).

Around the beginning of volume 3 a shift happened. It first started with mokmoklen deciding to remove the BL tag , which tbh at that time still didn’t seem like that big of a deal. Especially to me , I’ve always felt like the story didn’t need to specifically be categorized as BL for Yoshiki and Hikaru’s feelings to shine through.

But then she started to make clear how “Hikaru” CANT whatsoever feel or understand human love.

Now this is where the first problems start , because in the first volumes you can clearly see that THIS is not the case AT ALL.

And it’s not proven only by his overall behavior in the story , but also from the art she used to post.

To be fair I wouldn’t even been mad about Yoshiki’s ancestor being a woman if you told me in volume 1 , because to me it was clear that Yoshiki and Hikaru loved each other.

And fundamentally speaking , since the story is still ongoing , I know that Yoshiki’s ancestor being a woman doesn’t really take anything from the possibility of Yoshiki and “Hikaru” still ending up together. But what truly upsets me about this it’s the intentions and the meaning behind this choice.

Plus the fact that mokmoklen made it clear that now Yoshiki doesn’t feel anything for “Hikaru”. It also worries me how she still hasn’t made Yoshiki open up about his feelings for the real Hikaru either. It’s as if what was so clear to us in the first volume is now being precluded to us for whatever reason.

Hikaru and Yoshiki’s love for each other and their homosexuality is one of the main points that makes them who their are and why they act in certain ways. Their struggles to accept their orientations in a closeted and homophobic village are what makes them such layered and complex characters.

And I literally concluded by saying that I do NOT believe that if this ever turns out to be queerbaiting she ever intended for any of this to happen since the beginning. Something is going on in her life because she has delated most of her BL works on her private accounts

What is your HC for Will’s sexuality? Do you see him as bisexual? Also if we only consider canon, is Will a straight man who happened to fall in love with one man (Hannibal)? Sorry for my ignorance here as I am not part of the queer community, but if a straight man falls in love with just one man in particular and doesn’t feel attracted to others, is he considered bisexual? Because I think this is where Will fits. I personally don’t think he’d be attracted to any other men, just Hannibal.

Hi! I don't have a clear headcanon here, but I enjoy speculating because I adore Will as a character.

To note, I won’t be relying on Bryan’s words in this meta as he gave us three different versions of Will’s sexuality, where he called him heterosexual with Hannibal being his possible exception (Bryan: I feel one is omnisexual and one is heterosexual and there's a lot of influence going back and forth, who knows with a six pack of beer what would happen), hinted at Will’s bisexuality (Bryan: You can have this intimate connection with somebody that then causes you to wonder where the lines of your own sexuality are), and implied that Will might be gay (Bryan on Twitter: “YOU KNOW BETTER THAN TO BREED” #SUBTEXT #HANNIGRAM #WhatAreYouBecoming). These tags point out not simply to Will’s darkness, but to the other things he (possibly) represses.

So, I think only the show itself should be taken into account when discussing this topic. On the surface, we see Will interested in Alana in S1, sleeping with Margot in S2, and marrying Molly in S3 — and of course, falling in love with Hannibal in the process of all 3 seasons. However, the three women in his life are united by some common aspects — namely, 1) they are perfectly safe and ordinary (with maybe Margot being an exception, but her own sexuality plays a role in this); 2) Will never develops any real emotional connection with any of them. To be more specific.

Alana

We first hear Will referring to Alana in E1 of S1, when he just distantly calls her by her last name. In the course of their time together, Will never seeks Alana out himself. It is Alana who comes to his class, or to the hospital, or to his home — Will does flirt with her, and he kisses her first, but he never appears genuinely interested because he never seems to think about her unless she comes to him. The only exception I personally remember is in E8, where we learn that Will called Alana and invited her over to help him find an animal that was attacked by coyote. Still, the script offers an interesting bit here.

WILL GRAHAM: I invited you over on the off chance we find it alive. Hard to wrangle a wounded animal by myself. (then, realizing) Did you think it was a date?

ALANA BLOOM: Honestly, it never crossed my mind.

Will is at first relieved, then almost disappointed.

So, why relieved? And why flirt with Alana at all if he isn’t actually interested? As I see it, Alana is a very normal, perfectly safe and socially acceptable choice, a nice beautiful woman whose acceptance is clearly important to Will. We know that Will is fighting his demons all the time — he desperately wants to be normal, to bury the darkness inside him. I would say, to him, an acceptance by such a normal person as Alana would mean that there is nothing wrong with him and that he can be normal, too. Now, I can’t say if it was really planned or if it is just a set of coincidences, but I think that the theory that makes most sense is that Will was attracted to Alana’s normalcy first and foremost. He craved an ordinary life at that point, and Alana was someone who could give it to him. The more time passes, the stronger Hannibal and Will’s bond gets, the colder Will acts with Alana. By S3, he doesn’t even know that she had a child and who she is with, so they obviously do not keep any contact. For these reasons, Will never appears emotionally invested in their relationship to me — he remembers about Alana only when she comes to him, like he is only interested in her because she is the only woman he is friends with, someone he doesn’t have to try hard with.

The only aspect that points to the sincerity of Will’s attraction to Alana is his words to Hannibal — that he wanted to kiss her since he’d met her as she’s very kissable. I can interpret it in two different ways. Will can be truly attracted to Alana or he might be so repressed that he thinks he wants things that he doesn’t (and we do have a precedent here — Will tries to deny who he really is in regard to his darkness for quite a long time).

Margot

I think we can all agree that Will was never emotionally interested in Margot. Like with Alana, it is Margot who seeks him out, and Margot is the one to initiate sex. Why does Will agree to it? Just because he wants it? I think it is possible, but I also think it’d be a little out of character for him for several reasons. Will knows Margot has some agenda. He knows she is not interested in sex with him because she admitted she is a lesbian. When she makes her move, Will tells her, "I've got the wrong parts for your proclivities". So he knows the truth, yet still agrees to have sex with her, and during this process, he doesn’t really see Margot. He sees Alana, Hannibal, and a Stag Man– a being that symbolizes his and Hannibal’s connection. More than that, he reaches orgasm only when the Stag Man appears. So, it is equally possible to read this scene as Will’s attempt to engage into the most natural activity in the world — sex with a woman, but he still fails at it by dragging a man and a monster into it.

Molly

Molly is a character who seems alien in the world of the show because she’s the embodiment of normalcy. Will marries her, and we can surely assume they have sex, but from the first seconds of their scenes, it is clear that emotional intimacy between them is missing. Molly and Walter go fishing, an activity that Will enjoys deeply and that could be a uniting hobby for him and his new family. However, Molly and Walter go alone, Will stays home. In all their scenes together, Will never initiates contact between them — he never attempts to touch Molly, sometimes even going out of his way to avoid it. In the hospital, after Dolarhyde’s attack, Will still doesn’t touch her, though his hand twitches as if he considers it. In the second scene, he touches the pillow near Molly’s head, which is so awkward and embarrassing that I’d personally never be able to tell these people are married. The most important thing, Will doesn’t return her ‘I love you’, which is very deliberate. Hannibal tells him that he has chosen a ready-made family, and Will doesn’t argue with it. He goes to Hannibal at the first opportunity because he missed him, not because he needed his help, and then after Dolarhyde’s attack and after learning Hannibal is in love with him, Will easily discards both Molly and Walter and we never see them again. He basically breaks up with Molly back at the hospital, as if her first contact with something not normal taints her in his eyes, breaks the normalcy he thought he needed from her.

So, it is clear that Will never really developed emotional bonds with women in his life. Was he truly attracted to them, or did he like them for the cover of normalcy they could potentially provide for him? I wouldn’t be surprised if Will turned out to be flexible, bisexual, or gay, as it is really open to interpretation and there is enough subtext to support every version. I used to think that Will was bi, but I also wonder if his possible repressed homosexuality could be one the factors that made his fight with himself so intense. Taking into account the area where Will has grown, to him, it is bad enough that he is a killer — he’s also a gay one at that. I think it could enhance his struggle through S1-3 and his slow realization that adhering to social norms in all ways does not make him happy.

Then again, I think Will’s sexuality doesn’t actually even matter at this point because after all seasons, there is only one person who is going to be a permanent part of his life, among all men and women — Hannibal. We have seen that neither Will nor Hannibal can tolerate the other’s partners, and with rich sexual subtext between the two of them, I believe they will easily move forward in their relationship post-fall.

Brushing aside works that contain canonical character death, probably a place where the water touches the sky, even though it’s an ambiguous ending.

I don’t know if there’s one with an ending that’s more definitively happy than everything else, but bombshell has a very fun, flirty ending.

No outright hate, but I have received a handful of comments that basically amounted to “what you wrote in this story isn’t to my tastes and I'm going to tell you why you should've written what I wanted to read,” which. Y’know. Dldr 🙃

9. do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do, though I’ve never publicly posted anything more explicit than a fade-to-black. Mostly I’ve written collaborative scenes with friends, either full-blown role-play style or more spur-of-the-moment snapshots than highly structured, fully fleshed out scenes. If I’m writing by myself, I tend to lean harder toward sensual and less toward outright E-rated PWP.

10. do you write crossovers?

Not in the strictest sense, although I’ve thrown ideas around with friends, absolutely. I’m more inclined to full-on AUs (e.g., the DBH characters in the Star Wars universe but not interacting with all of the canon SW characters). I tend to lose interest in projects too quickly to sustain crossovers or AUs of significant size.

The Skyrim rewrite. I have a solid 25,000-plus words hanging around, but they barely scratch the surface of the canon story, and I don’t play the game anymore, so. It languishes. I occasionally reread the Battle of Whiterun scene I wrote, though, because I do love it v much.

16. What are your writing strengths?

A tightly bound trinity of subtext, showing instead of telling, and descriptions. I always joke I never write text, I only write subtext. Learning how to tell sometimes instead of showing everything has been. a struggle. When I know the characters really well and can hear them clearly, my dialogue’s also excellent.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Follow-through’s the biggest one. I tend to get bored and thus uninspired fairly easily, so I usually need a strict externally imposed deadline or someone (like a coauthor) who’s otherwise waiting on my finishing a given piece for me to push through to the end. Plotting the final quarter of stories tends to give me a lot of trouble if I don’t come up with the ending right away. If I don’t know where I’m aiming, I wander aimlessly before almost inevitably moving on to another project. This is why most of my solo projects are relatively small.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Nuclear launch codes. No, seriously, it can work so, so, SO well, in VERY limited, bite-size pieces. Unless the work is intended for readers who are familiar with the languages being used, I prefer to see alternate languages used as flavor text only.

Am I allowed to say a WIP that most people haven’t seen? No? Probably thermal equilibria, chapter two specifically. The dialogue tickles me every time I reread it.

I like how your writing gives us room to really have fun with the story. the vivid descriptions that are vague in bodily detail, give a perfect impression on how the characters take things. Like Darius for example, when enthralled. Less vivid descriptions of what his body is doing when he's feeling. More of what he feels less of his body. It shows to me, he feels emotions more personally and intensely than when not enthralled. /pos

We understand he pretends to not be sensitive, but he is. Thays why he's quick to anger unenthralled. And why he's stiff or too fidgety. Or when enthralled, quick to blush, cry, and whine for his master to even give him an ounce of attention. Even teasing attention, emotional connection comes easily to him, and way to quickly it slips off and away. It makes this shift of scenario, scene, emotion, and the subtext all the more nejoyable to me. Even if you do state some things outright still, the way you choose to do that and to not do that gives us a nice flow. Really keeping everything so nice and flowy within the pov. It's not about giving all the time it is also about how you hold back and that's what's so so soooo much fun about your stories. We’re actually having a small resurgence in the tags with new people watching both series, which is fun. Those people inspire me to keep posting too, it’s all full circle.

I am… not really sure how to prepare you for lolilo tbh. It’s a loose adaptation of Shakespeare’s Love’s Labors Lost, and it’s a lot heavier and angstier than NMTD for one thing, so be warned. Pedrazar is a very slow burn, be prepared for a journey! I liked Freddie right away bc I relate to her anxious energy, but you might take some time to warm up to her, that’s fair.

I recommend you head to @beatriceeagle and check out the series of Lolilo meta analysis posts she made with her sister a few years back. It’s a show that trades in subtext and has a lot of important stuff go down offscreen. Reading the metas really helps give a more thorough understanding and insight into the characters and why they behave the ways they do. It might help you understand where Freddie’s coming from, and the others too.

As far as Beadick, I’ll tell you they will break your heart, but it will be put back together again. If you need more of them, the missing offscreen moments and development of their relationship are kind of my specialty in terms of fanfiction. I wrote “the world is too quiet without you nearby”, a 16-chapter fanfic covering the time period between NMTD and Lolilo when Bea and Ben are in a long-distance relationship (plenty of fluff to pad the descent into angst). I also wrote “And We Are Finally Home”, a fic that covers the Beadick relationship arc from the lolilo episode “Confrontation” on through the end of the show- and I WILL be finishing and posting the epilogue to that fic as soon as I can, but you can read the chapters that are already up and still get a pretty complete story there. You don’t have to read them, but i wanted to share because I’m proud of them and I think they’re a good companion to the show if you like Team B! Mind the tags, but there shouldn’t be anything in the fics you can’t handle if you can handle the actual show.

The most important thing you might not get from the videos themselves: it’s canon from the creators that Benedick and Freddie and Balthazar are all dealing with anxiety disorders of some kind, though the creators didn’t actually intend to write that going in- it just happened that they agreed with the fandoms interpretation later on. So everything Ben does is colored by anxiety constantly telling him that he’s too much and that no one likes him and the only thing he’s good for is a laugh- and the (false) worry that Bea is getting sick of him and can’t wait to leave on her travels to get away from him. He’s trying to keep people from leaving him. Freddie is the way she is because she’s desperate for control in life, it’s the only way she feels calm. And Balthazar is petrified of confrontation and retreats into himself when he’s stressed. A lot of this is covered in much better depth in the metas I mentioned, but I wanted to let you know. Not as an excuse for any of their actions, but as an explanation that might make it a less frustrating watch.

I hope that answer wasn’t too overwhelming. I am just incapable of being normal about these webseries and especially about Benedick Hobbes (look, you don’t simply forget the character who got you through your own social anxiety diagnosis, and this is the obsessing-over-fictional-characters website. I talk about other things too, I promise! xD)

but on a more serious level.. i was thinking of writing this out in tags/in a reblog/etc but if this takes off i dont want it to circulate without this context.

as a registered [gender]anthony i would like to clarify: i'm not really on board with any sort of speculation/assumption/projection of trans identities onto anthony. with the amount of love and support he shows the trans community (including his daughter!!!!) i think it's very unlikely that he's like.. an 'egg' in the sense that he hasnt realized 'hey, i could be a girl if i want', and in the event that he isn't cis and is choosing to stay in the closet, that's very much nobody's business but the people he chooses to tell.

in regards to specifically the hoodwink 'i think i was meant to be a woman' thing, anthony just says shit all the time & with the way he talks about the rush/high of performing, i dont feel like that can really be taken at face value. and also he was ummmm really unstable that whole year. and in regards to lyric analysis, especially things about keeping secrets: i have no issue with trans readings of those in a way that's like 'i am trans and i feel this lyric relates to my experiences' but i am kind of uncomfortable about people assuming there are gender-related implications to some of them because uhhh. often times i think the secret that he's keeping from all his loved ones or whatever is like. very often drug/addiction related. and to me there's something... callous? about assuming there's an intentional trans subtext when it's pretty clear in retrospect that it's about like. heroin. (that last bit is particularly about violent waves. and also, this is not in response to any particular analysis)

In General while i may joke around and call anthony a girl or use she/her pronouns or things like that, i don't really think anthony is trans and if he is, it's not our business unless he makes it public. i think he's just a guy who is gnc

Give me a fictional character and I will say:

Favorite thing about them: His big dumb hero's heart. His compassion. How much he loves his home, his people, his family, his beloved, his friends — how much he loves.

Least favorite thing about them: //stares pointedly at his inability to form meaningful connections because Thor is Not Allowed to be Not Okay (even when it's obvious and people he loves asks him to share his heart).

Three things I have in common with them:

I am, myself, an elder sibling!! And one whose younger brother was/is someone I am incredibly close to, care a great deal about — that entire drama is very close to home for me.

A passion bubble for friends and family that's, on occasion, close to the surface... but otherwise am chill 👍

and .... bunt out golden child syndrome vibes. Especially that vibe of "do it on your own and put on your leader face at all times, because all eyes are on you, good luck"

Three things I don’t have in common with them:

Random Headcanon: One time I considered the thought of little!Thor being exceptionally friendly with his kitchen staff servants, and because he's a strong little guy, he'd pick up giant barrels 3x his size and lug them around just because he wants to be helpful. And he'd do it with or without the prize of getting snuck goodies (though he would definitely prefer the goodies, were it up to him.)

Unpopular Opinion: I'm not sure if this counts as an unpopular opinion exactly, but I do always find it interesting that in the Frozen Vault Scene in Thor (2011), what the cinematography and editors show us that sets Thor off is seeing the dead einherjar...

And I'd actually say that this triggers his anger more than the interruption of his crowning ceremony.

So with that in mind, I'm not actually sure that (most of) his rage regarding the situation was about the coronation at all, in that case. At least, not in comparison to the fear he states (semi-subtextually) about being strong enough to maintain Asgard's borders were. ("They know you are vulnerable.")

He actually seems to only be upset about the coronation AFTER Odin makes it very clear he's decided to change his mind and rescind the crown from him entirely ... which only further fuels the point that Thor isn't ready. (aka: the one thing Thor is keenly aware of, scared of, and is scared the Frost Giants also know.) Which, you know, he's not at that point in time, but I don't see a lot of people talk about the details of that particular inciting incident all that much.

(honestly the ENTIRE text and subtext of the frozen vault scene absolutely FASCINATES ME so maybe I'll do a deep dive on it one day idk)

no real, I’m the person people talk about when they say dyslexia

(I have all the other ones too, dysgraphia, dyscalclia, dyspraxia too)

And so my reading comprehension and also spelling is kinda trash, not in a bad faith way but in a “I genuinely completely missed like a whole paragraph” way.

which just sucks, I’m still extremely new to the whole “writing” thing.

genuinely if you saw something from a couple years ago vs now you’d be flabbergasted at how much we’ve improved.

but I always thought it was extremely rude to bully and or be mean about people who don’t understand or read things right or write things right.

you just genuinely do not know who they are and why they do it, whenever I try to correct someone I say it kindly and give constructive feedback.

Like genuinely it’s not hard to be kind, some people are still learning, sometimes it’s someone’s second language, sometimes they use speech to text and text to speech.

it’s just such a deeply ingrained belief that anyone who misspells or misspeaks or misunderstands is dumb or stupid.

I can’t even count on my fingers how many times I’ve misheard, worded something trash, or misunderstood or misinterpreted something.

but that’s just how I am and I can’t change it, but I can change my reaction and outcome and make friendships even after fucking up.

it’s just a sad feeling that even if you have the best intentions you still fail horribly, subtext and tone are hard to parse through, so much meaning and context gets a bit screwy when you write it down.

and sometimes life is filled with mistakes and failures and there’s nothing wrong with that, I can’t know everything and I probably never will.

The "trouble" that I mentioned in the tags that I got into was when I said I unfollowed someone for being rude about reading comprehension and had a complete stranger come out of nowhere and correct me like I was talking about them when I wasn't and then when I said I wasn't and was frustrated that people apparently do this enough to assume unrelated call outs about it are vagues about them, they acted like I was "rude" and like...

I'm an alter that has slammed doors hard enough to crack walls. I've said such utterly fucked things. I am trying my hardest, my best, to be nice when I'm upset. I have come so far and it hurts. I use all my energy when I do it. Tumblr is almost like a kind of language thinking therapy for me. It's a good place to practice being as polite as I can, because it's safer to fail online as opposed to IRL, where backspace and walk away are not options.

To try as hard as I did and still be called rude is... Ugh. It's just awful. Especially when it was an otherwise cool blog that said that about me. They even said on their blog separately if another alter apologized on my behalf that they'd be friends with them and just avoid me.

And that's actually trauma for me! That kind of thing seriously destabilizes my system. I've had people literally abuse my system by manipulating us like that and talking about me, calling me an asshole like I can't hear. But I get that that's just a mistake too.

It's all mistakes!

I think the world would be a better place if more mistakes were seen as harmless.

Also I vibe with the jack of all trades bit. We definitely as a system feel that.

5. Sad Broken Bois. Strange and unusual you say? Well,

And a broken sad boi. Its really easy to tap into the mindsets of complicated characters like Billy Hargrove, Draco Malfoy, Harry Osborn, Peter Parker etc, because they all share the central theme of personal tragedy, abuse, absent/abusive parents, and eventual character redemption (at least when I write it.) It's helped me process many of my own traumas and get out some of the stuff that's been echoing in my head for too long. and idk what it is about us fic writers but we really do love torturing our fictional bois XD

4. Sex workers. This ones 'why' is complicated and lengthy, but at least half of my fics have a character that has/or is currently engaged in sex work so I think it qualifies as something I never get tired of writing.

3. Smut. I’ve been writing it for decades. Its fun for me, it brings me personal joy, and it brings me joy when other people enjoy it too. Probably says a lot about me as a person but whatever that's what writing is for. You gotta have some fun with it.

2. Slow Burn. You know, as a reader, sometimes slow burn drives me crazy. Especially when I’m in that mood. But I am also such a hopeless romantic for my characters from my favorite medias finding each other and growing a romance. I also love seeing what scenes other people see that stick out to them as “more than friendly” or have clear homoerotic subtext. that's the most fun angle for me to explore creatively, and sometimes when I'm hitting a wall, I'll go visit someone else’s written universe and see how my boys fall in love there =]

1. Queerness. It's no secret there is a SEVERE lack of queer representation in media. In all forms. As a consumer and queer myself, it's irritating, so I like exploring the universes we don't usually see on tv, in games, in movies, etc. It's like a fun gayer AU that lives and plays like a movie in my head, and sometimes, I write them down

Franz Ferdinand on Mike’s Playlist—Y’all This is Too Funny, They Need to Stop

Okay, remember how in my Mike’s playlist analysis posts I said that “Be Afraid” by Franz Ferdinand stumped me? Yeah, so I revisited it today and…

Wow.

Okay.

So, first of all, I don’t know how I didn’t get this before, but even though there are barely any lyrics, saying that the lyrics foreshadow Mike getting Vecna’d isn’t too much of a stretch. Here they are:

“Don't be afraid if you hear voices/Feel the sweet air spoken upon you/Dream again/Sometimes the sound of a thousand whispers”

We’ve talked about this before, but I’ll rehash it in my own words for the sake of context. “Hearing voices” could easily align with the Vecna visions, “dream” is a motif we see used on the playlist that I am currently going through (almost finished!) to reference hallucinogenics (a metaphor for Vecna’s visions) and generally a theme of “things aren’t what they seem.”

So yeah, I’d say these lyrics foreshadow Mike’s eventual Vecnafication. However, it’s still kind of vague on what will be the result of that Vecnafication, and the fact that this song is so short…kind of wigs me out. I think death for S5 Mike is fairly likely, considering the lyrics I’ve analyzed on this playlist and the death tags you all have found. However, whether or not he’ll come back has been left kind of vague…freaky. I personally think that he will, but this still scares me.

I honestly should have stuck this right on the “Holy Shit” list—not because of the song, but because of the artist.

Well…sort of. When I first went back to revisit this song, I was only looking for the lyrics to THIS PARTICULAR SONG. And the lyrics did provide a lot of information. But the real meat of why this song choice is currently blowing my mind is not because of the lyrics, but because of the other songs the artist has created. Lemme give you a list. There are…several interesting ones.

“Lucid Dreams (2009)”

“Michael (2004)”

Miss me with that shit. Please.

Now, the fact that these songs are next to each other is due to alphabetization and not symbolic meaning left for Stranger Things fans, but I just think that little detail is neat.

And…HOW can we say that Franz Ferdinand having a song called “Michael” and then a song by that artist being on his playlist is a coincidence? Answer: WE CAN’T. BECAUSE IT’S NOT. And an artist who has also given us song name gems such as:

Seriously? You expect me to believe that the creators didn’t see this? The Duffers? hi I saw your tags on the musicals poll and im kind of curious about the homophobia comment at the end. is there homophobia in cats? or the cats movie? sorry i only know a little about cats in general

Hey! I'm terrible at explaining things, I really am, but I mean a lot of people who don't like Cats (not *everyone* but a lot), well it comes from a lot.... Homophobic roots. They think its weird, there's "no plot", they think the costumes are strange and they just want to not like it, but a part of them not liking it is inherent homophobia because a lot (and I mean A LOT) of queer people LOVE Cats. Not only that but majority of the actors/actresses who perform in Cats are not straight/ are gender nonconforming. And when you watch Cats, it is unashamedly gay as fuck, either in subtext or context, you can't watch that musical and think everyone performing in it is straight (unless you closed your eyes the entire time). Its in your face about it, even with Rum Tum Tugger, who is portrayed as a womanizer, is hinted at having a romantic relationship with another male character, Mr. Mistoffelees (and sometimes the actors even choose to kiss during Tugger's number, thats how in the face it can be sometimes). And that is just ONE example, I could pull out 50 more.

So you're looking at a lot of LGBTQIA+ people loving this weird and fun musical and some who are performing in this show and you (ambiguous you, not YOU specifically) think its gross and weird. You think the people who like it are strange. The people who are, again, mostly queer.

Its like how a lot of people think furries are gross and weird, and its really telling when majority of furries are people in the queer community, you know what I mean? And you immediately look at furries as a weird sex kink (when its not, it really isn't. Most furries I've met are actually asexual, and I used to go to furry cons all the time, some of the nicest people I've ever met who actually don't appreciate being sexualized).

AND HEY let me clarify that you can hate Cats and NOT be homophobic. Cats isn't everyone's cup of tea, I get it, it IS weird, I'm not saying you have to like Cats or you're being homophobic. I'm a huge Cats fan but I can see a lot (a loooot) of reasons why someone wouldn't like Cats. But there is a certain subset of people (in theatre and out of it) who do not like it for unfortunate reasons, who look at it and see all these queer people in it and immediately don't like it because of that.

Also yes the 2019 Cats movie is super homophobic (imo) and I hate it. It goes out of its way to be SUPER straight, like its overcompensating for its source material being very gay.

Its just a shame that musical theatre fans will be like "We are such a unique group and everyone is valid we love all art here!" and then the second someone says they loves Cats they're like "That show is so weird! Why do you like it? You must like it IRONICALLY, thats the only explanation! IT SUCKS, WHY DO YOU LIKE IT"

And a lot of musical theatre fans will claim its a shame that certain stage actors were in Cats! Why is it a shame? Why do you not like this actor being in Cats?

A huge amount of people don't like Cats because when they think of Cats, they immediately relate it to queer people.

Hi, I would like some advice. I am an adult and i am struggling with keeping friends, not sure why. After 2-3 years people just either loose interest or start making hurtful comments that make the friendship feel like it isn't worth it. I am a bit oversensitive due to trauma but i honestly feel like the things people do and say to me are meant to hurt me. It always happens after a few years and i feel like im the problem. I never do things that are meant to be hurtful but i have been called cold and i probably miss some social subtext. No one ever corrected me if i my behaviour is what causing this and i feel like if i said something hurtful people would say something.

How do i know if i am just overreacting over and over with different people or if I am a bad friend that keeps screwing things up?

It sounds like you've had multiple examples of friends saying hurtful things to you or claiming that you miss some social cues. I think the fact that no one has ever corrected you or explicitly explained what you might be doing wrong suggests that it's not really your problem. It sounds like these people lack the communication skills to effectively express how they feel about you or if they have a problem with you. It may also be a sign of a lack of emotional maturity if they resort to being hurtful instead of explaining themselves.

It sounds like it may not be a problem with you as you say you never do things that are meant to be hurtful, though it's possible that you may not detect how your words may hurt someone else. Ultimately, perhaps you could try to be more mindful of your tone or wording, but until someone is able to articulate what you may be doing wrong, I don't think there is necessarily a cause for concern.

So I write fic for and am just a huge fan of a relatively obscure old show called Hawaiian Eye. Equally fond of its sister series Surfside 6.

I’ll get around to 77 Sunset Strip, eventually. I acknowledge it’s weird I haven’t watched that series since it’s the one the spawned the rest.

Anyway.

The homoerotic subtext is prevalent on all of these shows. Surfside 6 is definitely the “hold my beer” series outta the bunch. Sadly, that’s probably why it didn’t last as long as its peers.

Two, later three, men living on a small houseboat with one bedroom—you come to your own conclusions. I am firmly in the “Dave and Ken are a couple and Sandy is their child who sleeps on the couch” camp.

Sandy is a full grown man and just a fellow private detective, I know. And I also know he lived at the racquet club for at least part of the series’ run.

Moving on.

Hawaiian Eye, however, is a little different than Surfside 6 in that I interpret the chemistry as polyship subtext, rather than purely homoerotic. There’s no direct romantic or sexual chemistry between the male leads, Tracy and Tom, as far as I’m concerned. But there is this flirty banter and underlying innuendo between them and the leading lady, Cricket.

The guys both call her “lover”. A lot. Although it’s treated more like someone would call someone else “honey” or “dear”, this show is the only time I’ve ever heard the word used in that context. Kinda pet name, kinda not—again, it’s subtext, and subjective.

Cricket has called each of them lover in the same fashion. Tom has referred to her as lover TO Tracy, in a manner that one could argue is suggestive of them all being together.

It’s all very playful, and in the open, and too amicable to be a love triangle. I’m sure anyone would argue the intent was to portray a lighthearted, “who really likes whom?” game. To tease audiences with hints of romantic feelings, but without allowing the show’s perennial bachelors to get into a serious relationship because their singleness was paramount to maintaining the show’s vibe.

Anyway (again).

I find it all extremely fascinating to look back at shows like this where the writing is so clearly on the wall and be both giddy to see it, but also a little sad to think that the only way anything other than het romance, attraction, relationships COULD be presented was as subtext.

I can also say that of the Hawaiian Eye fics I’ve written, the one where people see a M/M tag (M&M tbf) is the one with more hits. I feel bad for anyone who read that hoping it was romance because it’s an ampersand tag highlighting the friendship between these two characters. And it’s certainly possible that some people clicked on the story ready to rage over the idea of Tom (Robert Conrad’s character) and Moke (an under appreciated supporting character played by Doug Mossman) hooking up and then being a mix of relieved in disappointed when it was gen fic with a bit of angst and whump.

Either way, there was, is, and always will be an audience for and a need of true LGBTQ+ content, and my experience in old fandom has reinforced that in ways I wasn’t expecting.
